The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed critical areas in need of attention from utilities worldwide. According to IoT World Today, the utility industry has faced difficulties with providing always-on services and cyberattacks. McKinsey & Company says utilities must reimagine their operating models based on what they’ve learned from this crisis and reform to better understand and prepare for future environmental and competitive changes. To that end, AT&T is exploring how FirstNet can be used for utilities, including first response work associated with wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes and more.

IoT has enabled utilities to be flexible and resilient, with remote monitoring and working from home. Low-power wide-area (LPWA) cellular modules that can operate on batteries for 10 years or longer can allow grid devices to enhance grid security, resilience and manageability to prepare for future crises. Utilities can now leverage sub-300-square-millimeter class low-power communication modules to enable next-generation sensors, detectors, actuators and even meters that haven’t been feasible before.
